History
Almay was developed as a result of Fanny May Woititz’s need for makeup that was not too harsh for her sensitive skin. In the 1930’s, makeup was heavy and thick, often made from chemicals that did not take gentle skin into account. Woititz turned to her husband Alfred, a professional chemist, who tested various ingredients to see which caused irritation. Working with dermatologist Dr. Marion Sulzberger, the two developed a cosmetics formula more pure and gentle then anything else available. The name Almay was a combination of Alfred and Fanny May.
A Commitment to the Original Vision
Over the years, Almay has not lost sight of their beginnings in developing gentle and safe makeup products. They continue to be an innovative company, introducing the first entire cosmetics line of hypoallergenic products. The company also was the first to introduce 100% fragrance-free products and disclose ingredients listings.
